Sensory Integration Therapy

Sensory integration therapy aims to improve and support the difficulties experienced by individuals with sensory processing disorder.

What is sensory integration therapy?

Sensory integration therapy helps individuals to cope with the difficulties they have responding to their senses and environment appropriately. Sensory integration therapy challenges and stimulates the individual's senses (sound, sight, touch, smell and taste) through a range of tasks and activities.

Sensory integration is a process where the brain receives and interprets information about the body and the environment. The brain then processes this information and uses it to create appropriate behavioral and bodily responses. Individuals with sensory processing disorder have difficulties interpreting and processing this sensory information and creating appropriate responses to fulfill the demands of their environment.

Sensory integration therapy is commonly carried out by occupational therapists.Sensory integration therapy focuses on controlling sensory stimulation, with the aim of gaining an appropriate adaptive response from the individual. Sensory integration therapy involves tasks and activities which provide proprioceptive (body position sense), tactile (touch) and vestibular (body movement sense) as stimulation.

The type and number of sessions which are given will differ for each individual and will be dependent on their specific needs and abilities.

Who can benefit from sensory integration therapy, how can it help individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorders?

Sensory integration therapy is highly beneficial for individuals with sensory processing disorder in helping them to manage their daily tasks and activities more effectively.

Individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorder will often experience difficulties with their sensory processing. The occupational therapist will provide each individual with an individualised treatment plan which will be tailored to their specific sensory needs and overall ability.
